Diogenes Club | E30 - The Department of Health & Human Sacrifices

Nick Paro, Eric Lullove, and guest Jason Odell trace one thread from measles deaths Pennsylvania won't count to a $1.5 billion arch on the Mall — a government that budgets people as line items.

Summary

Nick Paro and Dr. Eric Lullove welcome in guest Jason Odell — photographer, biologist, and co-host of Latchkey Hour — to argue that HHS under RFK Jr. has inverted the mission statement Dr. Lullove reads aloud on air. Dr. Lullove reports that the Lancaster County coroner has released pathology on two infant deaths: a six-week-old who died August 18 of measles, and Ivan Miller, who died August 14 of a ruptured spleen with measles listed as a significant condition, and that the CDC still has not officially recognized the fatalities. Odell, who holds a PhD in biology, sets that against the actual history of American eugenics — Mendel, the 1930s sterilization programs, the syphilis experiments run on Black Americans — and then names the sorting mechanism the episode keeps returning to: it isn’t genes anymore, it’s money. Dr. Lullove says it flatly — “It’s not your genes, it’s your pocketbook” — and stacks the receipts: a Senate HELP Committee projection that the Medicare trust fund goes insolvent by 2034, a Republican fix that quietly raises FICA on employers and paychecks instead of lifting the $184,000 Social Security cap, and a $440 monthly cut to Social Security checks if nothing changes. Odell supplies the household version: his premium up 600% after subsidies lapsed, and $270 out of pocket for each of two blood draws he needs next week.

The second half is about what the money buys instead. Paro walks the Cook Political Report Senate map — six toss-ups in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, with 52 as the only number that changes anything — while Dr. Lullove tallies roughly $1.5 billion in monument spending: a triumphal arch pitched at $100 million, a billion-dollar ballroom, the Kennedy Center, and a National Garden of American Heroes with 250 life-size statues. All three read the new Space Force dress uniforms the same way, and Paro, an Army veteran, declines to treat it as a joke. Gallup is the closest thing to good news: 89% of American adults now call the federal government corrupt, the highest figure in twenty years, with the sharpest movement among Democrats (57% to 91%) and independents (78% to 90%), and Supreme Court approval at a record-low 33% after Republican approval of the Court fell 21 points to 58%. The ask at the end is far smaller than any of it — Nieta Greene’s Say No to Crip Crow campaign, collecting sign-ups for lobbying, phone banking, and legislator meetings to codify Olmstead into the ADA through the Curtis Wilson Act.

“America has not fully fulfilled its commitment to guaranteeing equality for all since its founding nearly 250 years ago… Disability Community for Democracy will urge Congress to enact legislation that codifies the Olmstead decision, ensuring that states cannot compel the re-institutionalization of individuals with disabilities.”

— Nieta Greene, CEO, from Disability Community for Democracy’s official statement on the Olmstead memo
