It's (Stephen) Miller Time
Part 1 - The Story Before Stephen
Sick of this Shit, Stephen Miller—pt. 1
Hi y’all, it’s Nick, and I’m Sick of this Shit. I have a short intro, So it comes to Miller time, and the TL/DR—I hate this man with a passion and am making it a mission to know and expose every detail of his life. I am going in-depth, wish us all luck.
The Story Before Stephen
We’re going to begin with a little pre-Stephen. This is where I fear, my family and his has so many similarities. Our families are both Jewish, both Ashkenazi, and both hailing (more fleeing) from what is now modern-day Belarus. Both our families were refuges from the anti-Jewish pogroms and both our families are survivors. There are so many things in common in our family stories, it saddens me to no end that his journey has taken such a dark path. As sad as it may be, I do not pity him. I do not pity those who do not value the lives of others. Though this is not Stephen’s post-birth story, we’re not there yet.
Note: I will not humanize Stephen, but knowing his story helps us know the man.
For this one, we will focus on the good—the good of his ancestors and a legacy his family remains proud of. We will not focus on the stain he brings to that legacy.
Here we will start with Miller’s maternal great-great-grandfather, Wolf Lieb Glotzer (Glosser). Glotzer was born in 1858 and died in 1927. Glotzer’s story, I mentioned above, begins as an immigrant fleeing the rise of anti-Semitism and hate, seeking refuge in America for a better and safer life. Like so many other Jewish families, they immigrated through Ellis Island, in New York, and found the places they could safely stay.
After arriving in New York, the family settled in Johnstown, PA. The Glotzer family found success as entrepreneurs in a coal capital, achieving the American dream—founding a successful business in 1906, the Glosser Bros. Department Store—as a downtown tailor shop and eventually being known for it’s trademark roasted peanuts and cashews. A place and a home to be proud of. In the end, the Glosser Bros. Department Store branched out into a full-service, upscale department store, and then later, in the 1970s, into the suburban discount store market through the Gee Bee Department Stores. After many successful years in business the Glosser Bros and it’s subsidiaries went into bankruptcy due to increases in competing discount retailers. After filing for bankruptcy in 1992, Glosser Bros was purchased by Value City. Those remains too later went out of business when Value City shuttered in 2008.
Outside of the family business, the Glotzer family were a part of a thriving Jewish community, with a mix of both Reform and Conservative Temples. The Glotzer family fell on the Conservative side of the aisle; however, they shared a community across both sides of the faith spectrum through Hebrew schools and synagogue youth group events. Through its time, the Jewish community became a bastion of philanthropic activity, with the Glotzer family being a big part of those efforts. The family and community donated to the founding of the State of Israel, as well as to the remaining family in their native Antopol, in Belarus, until the 1940s when they were wiped away by the Nazis. Even after a life of success, philanthropy, and community, the Glotzer’s made it big and then got greedy. They made a partnership with a bank and made a deal they couldn’t pay back. This deal eventually led to the 1992 bankruptcy filing and buyout by Value City, ending the Glotzer Bros. after 86 years.
In the end Johnstown had an exodus, the population fell, and industries changed. The Jewish communities in Johnstown followed the larger trend, leaving rural towns for urban centers. Along with many others, the Glotzer family left the Rust Belt and found themselves moving to Florida and California. And with this move from the Rust Belt to the golden waves of amber grain in California, we end Part 1 of It’s (Stephen) Miller Time.
Until next time friends, this is Sick of this Shit, with Nick.
