The Unmaking of the Shield The lab coats fade like morning mist, The microscopes are blurred. A thousand years of "how" and "why" Are silenced by a word. The vial that held the polio ghost, The screen that caught the cell, Are traded for a sun-drenched field And secrets from a well. The iron lung is rusted shut, A relic of the past— But memory is a shallow bowl When shadows move so fast. We scrub the data from the page, The warnings from the wall, Believing that the "purest" life Can never let us fall. They say the soil will save us now, The tincture and the seed, Ignoring that the titan’s strength Was built on science’s creed. No needle’s prick, no regulated Flow of water clear— Just the ancient, quiet hum Of unregulated fear. The city gates are swinging wide, The watchmen sent away, To seek a health that’s "natural" In the twilight of the day. But when the fever starts to climb And old ghosts find the door, We’ll find that "making healthy" Wasn't what we bartered for.
