Psych Talk - the Asch experiment?

Exploring the extent to which social pressure from a majority group could affect a person to conform, pt. 1
1

Hey y’all — this is the opening to an interesting discussion on the Asch Experiment. This publication in the National Library of Medicine, The power of social influence: A replication and extension of the Asch experiment, details the results of an experiment to recreate the original findings. In the abstract, we can see the results as:

We find an error rate of 33% for the standard length-of-line experiment which replicates the original findings by Asch (1951, 1955, 1956). Furthermore, in the incentivized condition the error rate decreases to 25%. For political opinions we find a conformity rate of 38%. However, besides openness, none of the investigated personality traits are convincingly related to the susceptibility of group pressure.

Which, is pretty spot on. Notice that 38%? Does it correlate with recent polling on Trump’s favorability ratings? The answer—yes, 37% approval to be correct. That could be correlation without causation, but I won’t hang my hat on it. I’d highly recommend checking out the experiment and more discussions with

and as we dissect this ongoing social experiment we find ourselves in.
